Our  History

For 87 years, Mt. Enon Baptist Church has been an integral part of the African American community of South Philadelphia. Since its founding in 1938, the church has stood as a beacon of hope—ministering to the spiritual, educational, social, and developmental needs of the community. On Sunday, June 5, 1938, God birthed the vision of Mt. Enon Baptist Church in the home of the late Rev. Enos Mackey at 2654 South American Street. During a time when much of South Philadelphia was shaped by segregation and limited opportunity, Mt. Enon emerged as a place of worship, dignity, and community strength. As membership grew, so did the vision. The congregation converted a building at 2654 South American Street into its first worship space, holding its inaugural service there on September 4, 1938. Under Rev. Mackey’s leadership, the church flourished spiritually and financially, eventually outgrowing its original location. With faith and foresight, Rev. Mackey identified a former school building—originally built in 1874—at the corner of 5th and Snyder Avenue as the church’s future home. What others saw as a schoolhouse, he saw as possibility. After purchasing the building and completing necessary renovations, Mt. Enon established what remains its historic home. After nearly four decades of faithful service, Rev. Enos Mackey retired in 1977. His legacy of spiritual strength and community care laid the foundation for generations to come. In 1979, Rev. Ralph C. James, Sr. was installed as the church’s second pastor. A respected leader throughout Philadelphia, Pastor James guided Mt. Enon with wisdom, dedication, and a deep desire to see lives transformed by God’s love. Following an accident that left him incapacitated, he retired in 2002. During a season of prayer and transition, Rev. Meredith L. Griffin served as Interim Pastor beginning in December 2003, strengthening the church through powerful preaching and steady guidance while the congregation sought God’s direction. On June 24, 2006, Mt. Enon Baptist Church extended the call to Rev. Edmund T. Sherrill, becoming only the third pastor in the church’s history. Under Pastor Sherrill’s leadership, Mt. Enon has expanded its vision while remaining rooted in its spiritual foundation. In 2007, Mt. Enon Community Outreach, Inc. was formed to broaden the church’s impact beyond the sanctuary walls. Through academic enrichment programs, health initiatives, literacy efforts, financial workshops, and city partnerships, the church continues to serve South Philadelphia with compassion and purpose. During the COVID-19 pandemic and in the years since, Mt. Enon has provided food and essential services to hundreds of families in need. Mt. Enon’s ministry now extends beyond local borders. The church has strengthened its international outreach, supporting educational initiatives and community development efforts abroad while maintaining a deep commitment to its home community. Today, Mt. Enon remains active within the Pennsylvania Eastern Keystone Baptist Association and the National Baptist Convention, USA. The church continues to grow through Christian education, community engagement, and a steadfast commitment to biblical teaching. As Mt. Enon celebrates 87 years of ministry, we thank God for a rich heritage built on spiritual strength, visionary leadership, and faithful service. With gratitude for the past and faith for the future, we continue the legacy—trusting God to lead us into even greater works.
